Theodor Herzl Journal Entries

In Jewish Studies, we learned about Theodor Herzl and his fundamental part in the creation of Israel. In this assignment, we had to create journal entries narrated by Herzl about three of his struggles during his life and career. We chose antisemitism, opposition to Zionism, and Family struggles. We also created a Canva presentation which contains the journal entries.

Here it is:

Theodor Herzl

We also made a visual representation of the journal entries. So, we made a journal made of cardboard, fabric, and paper, containing the three entries.

Creative Portion

Through this project, we learned how to create a journal entry through someone else’s eyes. Herzl was a man who was incredibly important to the creation of the State of Israel. Even though he was not alive when Israel was created, he was one of the main reasons that Israel is what it is now. Herzl sacrificed so much for us to have a homeland – including, in the end, his life. He had three struggles that we wrote about: His family life, antisemitism, and the opposition to Zionism. We think that the memory of his sister kept him motivated. He must have battled many emotions and doubts for us to be where we are today. If the Zionist Congress hadn’t happened, we would probably not have our own state today. Herzl founded JNF, which still runs today, and one of the banking systems that Israel uses now. We can now be motivated to pursue our dreams, even if no one believes in us; we have to believe in ourselves. We appreciate his efforts, and I am glad that we learned about his work to give us a homeland.

Innovation Day Reflection 2025

We just had innovation day, and it was a blast. Our class had to make animal shelters. My partner (Alma) and I made a shelter for koalas named “Koala Kaves”. It was hard work, but it was worth it.

We worked in school, but what really made our project shine, was the work we did at home. At the start, we only worked in school, with some researching at home. Closer to Innovation day we started meeting up at home. Halfway through the process, we stored our project in a garbage bag at school (don’t ever do this). The next day we couldn’t find our project, it got thrown out! That taught us never to store anything important in garbage bags (or to paint the garbage bag so that people don’t mistake it for garbage). The good thing was, that after our project got thrown out, we worked extra hard to make up for it. We spent about ten hours on our models (physical and online) and around 2 hours for our board. I took charge of the coding, and I was surprised at how good I was at it.

One thing that I think we could have done better at was our ad. It was okay, but it wasn’t loud enough, and most of the time people couldn’t hear it so we had to skip it.

On the day of Innovation day, I was extremely nervous. I knew that we were good at public speaking, but we always seemed to cut each other off when we were practicing. The presentations to the parents the day before definitely helped, giving us time to practise and cool off our nerves before the big day.

One other thing that we learned was that it is better to have both the VR headset, and the computer to show the CoSpaces because some people get dizzy while looking through the headset, and it is good to have an alternative option.

Here are some pictures of our project

This project was extremely fun, and taught me many lessons. I am excited to do innovation day again next year!

Jewish studies Bar/Bat mitzvah what did I learn

We were learning about Bar/Bat mitzvahs and what responsibilities it comes with. Bar/Bat mitzvahs are milestones in someone’s life. It depends what level of observance you follow, but if you are orthodox there are more responsibilities, such as putting on tefillin and wearing tzitzit. Tefillin are black leather straps connected to a black box. There are two parts to the tefillin, the one on the arm, and the one on the head.

This is how to wear them

Boys are also commanded to wear tzitzit after their bar mitzvah. Tzitzit are fringes attached to the tallit meant to remind people of G-d 613 commandments/mitzvot.

Other responsibilities include keeping shabbat, keeping kosher, giving tzedakah, and others.

Innovation Day Reflection(:

Innovation day was a blast. I liked our project, because we put a lot of work into it inside, and outside of school. We made an ad, a website, and a logo. Our board was extremely squished because we had a lot of research, and other things, without a lot of space):
We were not confident going into innovation day because our circuit was not exactly working, but in the end it was good because we were able to make our circuit more secure. If we did this again, I would make sure that we had a bigger board with more space, and I would make sure that the circuit is permanent.

Un proverbe de Will Smith

En francais cette année nous avons pris un proverbe de Will Smith, et j’ai choisi

“He who says he can and he who says he can’t are usually right.” I chose this quote because it makes me think that everyone faces challenges in their own way.

“La personne qui dit je peux ou je ne peux pas, les deux ont raison.” Je choisi cette phrase parce que cela me fait penser que chacun fait face à différents défis a sa propre façon.
